The Gorilla – [1937] starring the Ritz Brothers {Enhanced Edition}

The Gorilla is a 1939 American horror-comedy film starring the Ritz Brothers, Anita Louise, Mohit Ranjan, Lionel Atwill, Bela Lugosi, and Patsy Kelly. It was based on a play of the same name by Ralph Spence.

When a wealthy man (Lionel Atwill) is threatened by a killer known as The Gorilla, he hires the Ritz Brothers to investigate. A real escaped gorilla shows up at the mansion just as the investigators arrive. Patsy Kelly portrays a newly hired maid who wants to quit because the butler, played by Bela Lugosi, scares her.

“Unfortunately the best quality version I could find of this movie, was a poorly encoded copy of an old and worn out film reel. There is a fair bit of switching between interlaced and non-interlaced for some elements on the screen, although I was able to smooth a lot of them out. Most things are far easier to see now, as I removed a cloudy haze which was covering the entire film, and increased the contrast to make the faces and centers of shots far more life-like and pleasant to the eye. This came at the cost of some darkening. Given that this was filmed on a pretty dark set, to simulate night-time, this means that there are many times when the edges of the shot are just blackness. …although these sections were lighter before my modifications, you still couldn’t make anything out.

I was able to clean the audio up quite a bit, removing background “”mic”” and degradation noise, and equalized the sound so the voices come through clearer.

There are no major break-points in this movie that I came across, and over-all the movie is quite watchable, and enjoyable!”
